Choosing Charcoal Powder for Briquette Making: Buyer's Guide
A buyer's guide for briquette makers: which spec figures to check, how to choose a mesh size, sampling before contract and which documents to request.
by ABRA BRIK Team
Good charcoal powder for briquette making has low ash, controlled moisture, high fixed carbon and a mesh size that suits your press. ABRA BRIK coconut-shell charcoal powder has reference figures of ash ≤ 5%, moisture ≤ 8% and fixed carbon ≥ 75%, in five sizes from 40 to 200 mesh. Before signing a contract, always test a sample on your own production line.
This guide is for briquette makers, both BBQ and shisha, who buy charcoal powder as their main raw material. Product figures come from the Kora Coconut catalogue and are reference specifications.
Why does powder quality decide briquette quality?
A charcoal briquette is essentially charcoal powder mixed with a binder, shaped and dried. The binder only holds things together. The briquette's main traits, such as heat, ash residue and odour, come largely from the powder.
So problems in the powder carry into the briquette. High-ash powder makes high-ash briquettes, and wet powder slows drying. Choosing the powder is the first step in protecting briquette quality.
Which specification figures should you check?
| Parameter | ABRA BRIK reference value | Why it matters for briquettes |
|---|---|---|
| Ash content | ≤ 5% | Sets how much ash the briquette leaves |
| Moisture | ≤ 8% | Affects mixing and drying time |
| Fixed carbon | ≥ 75% | The carbon that delivers heat |
| Volatile matter | ≤ 15% | Affects smoke and how the briquette lights |
| Sulfur | ≤ 0.05% | Low sulfur helps limit odour |
| Odour | Neutral | Important for shisha and BBQ use |
| Raw material | 100% coconut shell | One material type, easier to control |
Specifications may vary with origin, season, production method and customer requirements. Final figures are confirmed through pre-shipment inspection and a Certificate of Analysis (COA).
Which mesh size suits briquettes?
The powder comes in 40, 60, 80, 100 and 200 mesh; the higher the number, the finer the powder. Our article on coconut charcoal powder mesh sizes explains this in detail.
- Finer powder usually mixes more evenly with binder and gives a smoother briquette surface, but it is dustier and may need different water or binder ratios.
- Coarser powder flows more easily through feeders and makes less dust, but the surface can be rougher.
- Machine type: press and extrusion machines have different material needs. Follow the machine maker's advice or your line's experience.
- Briquette type: small shisha cubes often need a neat surface; BBQ briquettes are usually less demanding.
The safest approach is to test two neighbouring sizes and keep the one that moulds best with your binder recipe.
How should you test a sample before contract?
- Request a sample of the mesh sizes you are considering, with spec data.
- Test it in your lab for moisture, ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon, using the methods you will write into the contract.
- Run a trial batch with your usual binder recipe and machine.
- Test the briquettes for drop strength, ignition, smoke, odour and ash colour.
- Record the results as your baseline for comparing every shipment.
Which documents should you request?
Depending on product and destination, the following can be prepared: a COA for each shipment, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, MSDS / SDS, Fumigation and Phytosanitary Certificates where the destination requires them, and third-party inspection if you or your buyer ask for it.
What if you would rather not make briquettes yourself?
Not every brand owner wants to manage machines, binders and drying. ABRA BRIK also offers OEM briquette manufacturing under your brand. ABRA BRIK briquettes have been tested at the laboratory of Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry. See a finished product on the Shisha Cube Briquette page.
Frequently asked questions
What ash content is good for briquette powder?
The lower the better. The ABRA BRIK reference figure is ash ≤ 5%, with final figures confirmed by the COA for each shipment.
Can charcoal powder be moulded without a binder?
Usually not. Charcoal powder needs a binder to hold its shape and stay strong after drying.
Do I have to order a single mesh size?
No. You can discuss a combination of sizes to suit your line.
How is the powder priced for briquette makers?
We do not publish a price list. Pricing is discussed according to volume and contract duration.
