Coconut Charcoal Powder Mesh Sizes: What 40 to 200 Mean
What mesh numbers mean for coconut charcoal powder, how fine and coarse powders differ, and how to choose between 40 and 200 mesh.
by ABRA BRIK Team
The mesh size of coconut charcoal powder tells you how fine the powder is. A mesh number is the count of sieve openings per inch, so the higher the number, the finer the powder that passes through. A 200 mesh powder is much finer than a 40 mesh powder. ABRA BRIK offers five options: 40, 60, 80, 100 and 200 mesh.
This article explains how to read mesh numbers, how fine and coarse powders behave, and how to choose a size for your application. Product figures come from the Kora Coconut catalogue and are reference specifications.
What does a mesh number mean?
Mesh is a sieve size unit: the number of openings along one inch of the sieve wire. A 40 mesh sieve has 40 openings per inch; a 200 mesh sieve has 200, so each opening is much smaller. When a product is labelled "100 mesh", the powder has been screened through a 100 mesh sieve.
- A low mesh number (such as 40) means coarser particles.
- A high mesh number (such as 200) means finer particles.
The actual opening size also depends on wire thickness. If you need tight particle-size limits, agree the sieve and test method with your supplier.
What is the ABRA BRIK powder specification?
| Parameter | Reference value |
|---|---|
| Ash content | ≤ 5% |
| Appearance | Fine black powder |
| Fixed carbon | ≥ 75% |
| Volatile matter | ≤ 15% |
| Moisture | ≤ 8% |
| Sulfur | ≤ 0.05% |
| Odour | Neutral |
| Raw material | 100% coconut shell |
| Sizes | 40, 60, 80, 100, 200 mesh |
Specifications may vary with origin, season, production method and customer requirements. Final figures are confirmed through pre-shipment inspection and a Certificate of Analysis (COA).
How do fine and coarse powders differ?
| Property | Coarser (40–60 mesh) | Finer (100–200 mesh) |
|---|---|---|
| Flow | Flows more easily | Clumps more easily |
| Dust when handled | Less | More |
| Mixing | Fine for coarse blends | More even in fine blends |
| Packing | Looser | Tighter |
| Surface area | Smaller | Larger |
80 mesh sits in the middle. Many buyers start testing there and move coarser or finer based on results.
What is coconut charcoal powder used for?
The Kora Coconut catalogue describes the powder as suitable for carbon-based applications. In practice, uses fall into three groups:
- Briquette feedstock. Powder is mixed with a binder, shaped and dried into briquettes. See our guide on choosing charcoal powder for briquette making.
- Carbon-based applications. Industrial processes that need a plant-based carbon source in an easy-to-dose form.
- Industrial formulations. Blends that need a fine black powder with neutral odour and low sulfur.
How do you choose a mesh size?
- Start with your machines. Moulds, mixers and feeders each have a material size they handle well.
- Think about the finished product. A smooth surface usually needs a finer powder.
- Plan for dust. Very fine powder needs better dust control and protective equipment.
- Test two neighbouring sizes, such as 60 and 80 mesh or 100 and 200 mesh, on your own line.
How do you check mesh size on arrival?
The spec sheet and COA describe each shipment, but a quick check in your warehouse is still worth it. Take samples from several sacks (top, middle and bottom), sieve them with the mesh you ordered, weigh what stays on the sieve and what passes, and compare with earlier shipments. A large change can mean the powder has clumped from moisture or the size is off. Note the lot number and send the data to our team so both sides can keep quality steady.
How should you store and handle the powder?
- Keep it in a dry, covered area; powder absorbs humidity easily.
- Wear a dust mask and safety glasses when pouring or sieving.
- Keep it away from flames and sparks; airborne charcoal dust can ignite.
- Close opened packs tightly.
Frequently asked questions
Which is finer, 40 mesh or 200 mesh?
200 mesh. The higher the mesh number, the smaller the opening and the finer the powder.
Which mesh sizes are available?
Five sizes: 40, 60, 80, 100 and 200 mesh.
Do all mesh sizes share one specification?
The catalogue lists one set of reference figures for the powder: ash ≤ 5%, fixed carbon ≥ 75%, moisture ≤ 8% and sulfur ≤ 0.05%. Final figures are confirmed per shipment.
How is the powder priced?
We do not publish a price list. Pricing is discussed according to volume and contract duration. Ask for a written quotation on WhatsApp.
