Is Coconut Charcoal Safe? What Actually Decides It

The answer is not yes or no. What decides it is not the feedstock but how it was made and how it is used.

This question comes most often from shisha users and café owners, and the answer is usually oversimplified into "safe" or "dangerous". In reality, the safety of coconut charcoal is decided by three things — and the feedstock is only one of them.

1. Complete carbonisation

Charcoal that was not fully carbonised still holds volatile compounds. Those compounds leave as harsh smoke and odour when burned. Properly carbonised charcoal burns clean, with almost no smoke and no smell.

Checking it needs no instrument: light a single coal in a ventilated space. If it smokes heavily and smells sharp once the coal has evened out, carbonisation was incomplete.

2. Binder and additives

Briquettes are compacted with a binder. Tapioca is the common choice because it burns clean. What deserves caution is briquettes with lighting accelerants — convenient, but unsuitable for anything whose smoke is inhaled directly, such as shisha.

Our briquettes use tapioca binder at minimum dose, with no lighting accelerant.

3. Ventilation — the part most often ignored

This is the most important section of this article. Any burning charcoal — coconut shell, wood, any of it — produces carbon monoxide. The gas is colourless and odourless, so your senses cannot detect it.

Never burn charcoal in an enclosed space without ventilation — including bedrooms, tents, vehicles, or tightly sealed air-conditioned rooms. This holds for the highest-quality charcoal there is. Charcoal quality does not change this fact.

Safe shisha venues always have genuine air exchange, not merely air conditioning.

What about ash?

Ash content affects comfort and flavour rather than safety directly. High ash means the coal is covered quickly, heat is blocked, and in shisha it becomes noticeable. Our cube briquette is recorded at 2–3.56% ash (LHU 092/LHU/P2HB/07/2026).

What you can check before buying

  • Smoke and odour once the coal has evened out — both should be minimal
  • A numbered laboratory report, not a self-typed table
  • A statement of which binder is used
  • No suspicious "lights instantly" claim on shisha briquettes
