Organic Biochar

Coconut shell biochar for improving soil structure — not a fertiliser, and that distinction decides whether it does anything useful on your land.

Biochar is not a fertiliser

Biochar contains almost no plant-available nutrient of its own. What it changes is the physical and biological environment nutrients move through.

Its structure is porous, with an enormous internal surface area inside a small volume. Everything it does follows from that:

• Water retention. The pore network holds water against gravity and releases it slowly. In sandy soil, where water drains away before roots can use it, this is the largest effect.
• Nutrient holding. Those same surfaces hold nutrient ions that would otherwise leach past the root zone in heavy rain.
• Microbial habitat. The pores shelter soil microorganisms from predation and drying.

That alkaline pH is a benefit on acidic soils and a reason for caution on soils already alkaline. Test the soil before applying at scale.

Where it helps most

The largest gains are on sandy soils and degraded soils whose organic matter is depleted. On fertile, well-structured loam the measurable effect is often small — the soil already does what biochar would provide.

The one thing that decides your first season

Fresh biochar is an empty sponge. Applied raw, its surfaces adsorb nutrients already in your soil before releasing anything — and that shows up as a yield dip in the first season.

Compost it first, or soak it in a nutrient solution, before applying. Then work it into the root zone rather than spreading on the surface: biochar is light, and material left on top blows and washes away.
