Why Indonesia Leads the World in Coconut Shell Charcoal
Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of coconut shell charcoal. The reasons are structural — raw material, climate and decades of accumulated process knowledge.

Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of coconut shell charcoal — 163,321 tonnes according to International Coconut Community figures for 2022. That position is not an accident of pricing. It rests on three things that are difficult for other countries to replicate quickly.
The raw material is a by-product, not a crop
Coconut shell charcoal starts as waste. The shell is what remains after the flesh and water are taken for food, oil and beverage production — industries that already operate at enormous scale across the archipelago.
That matters commercially. A producer is not competing with anyone for the feedstock, and the supply does not fluctuate with charcoal demand; it follows food demand, which is far steadier. Countries that would need to grow coconuts specifically for charcoal cannot match that economics.
The climate does part of the work
Carbonisation and drying both need heat and low humidity at the right moments. Indonesia's climate provides a long dry season across the main producing regions, which reduces the energy needed to bring moisture down to a shippable level.
This is why moisture specifications from Indonesian producers tend to be achievable rather than aspirational. Charcoal above roughly 8% moisture arrives cracked, spits when lit, and can grow mould during a five-week voyage in a sealed container.
The know-how is generational
Carbonisation is not complicated to describe and genuinely difficult to control. Temperature, airflow and timing decide whether you get high fixed carbon or a soft, ashy product with an uncarbonised core.
In producing regions that knowledge has been accumulating for decades, passed through communities of small producers before it was ever industrialised. A new entrant can buy identical equipment and still take years to match the output, because the equipment was never the hard part.
What it means when you source here
The scale of the industry is an advantage for buyers, but it also means the range of quality is very wide. Being Indonesian tells you nothing about a specific supplier — the country produces both export-grade material and product that should never leave the domestic market.
What separates them is verifiable process:
- Feedstock control. Mature, clean shell rather than mixed material with bark and dust.
- Controlled carbonisation rather than open burning.
- Screening and drying before pressing, not after.
- Laboratory testing against a named standard at a named institution.
- Grade separation — export and domestic material kept apart from the raw material stage, not sorted at the end.
Ask about those five things. They distinguish suppliers far more reliably than any adjective on a website.
Where we sit in that picture
We have been producing bioenergy since 2019 and have operated as a bioenergy factory since 2024, from three locations. Current capacity is over 50 tonnes of briquettes a month, and up to 90 tonnes a month across charcoal and biochar. We currently supply buyers in seven countries.
Our material is tested at the Ministry of Forestry laboratory in Bogor, accredited by KAN, against SNI 06-3730-1995. Report 092/LHU/P2HB/07/2026 records 7,319 cal/g, 3.56% ash and 5.89% moisture for the cube briquette.
