Using Biochar in Organic Farming: A Practical Guide
Rates, charging methods, timing and the first-season mistake that makes growers conclude biochar does not work — a field guide rather than a theory piece.

This is the practical companion to the question of what biochar does to soil. Here the concern is narrower: you have decided to use it on an organic system, and you need to know how much, prepared how, and applied when.
Start with a trial strip, not the whole field
Biochar behaves differently across soil types, and the honest answer to "how much should I apply" is that your soil will tell you faster than anyone else can.
Leave an untreated control strip. Without one you will have opinions about whether it worked; with one you will have an answer. This is the single most valuable thing you can do in the first season, and it costs nothing.
Charging: the step that decides your first season
This is where most disappointing results come from, and it is entirely avoidable.
Fresh biochar is a sponge with nothing in it. Applied raw to a field, those pore surfaces will pull in ammonium, potassium and other available nutrients from the surrounding soil before they release anything back. On a soil that was already marginal, that shows up as a visible dip in the first season — and the grower concludes biochar does not work.
It does. It was just applied empty.
Three ways to charge it, all compatible with organic systems:
Co-compost it. Add biochar to the compost heap at roughly 10–20% by volume and let it compost normally. The biochar loads with nutrients and microbial life during the process, and as a bonus it reduces nitrogen loss and smell from the heap. This is the method most organic growers settle on, because it fits work you already do.
Soak it. Steep in compost tea, diluted manure slurry or liquid organic fertiliser for several days until saturated. Faster than composting, and useful when you need material ready this season.
Blend with manure. Mix with well-rotted manure and let it sit for a few weeks before spreading.
What you should not do is spread it dry from the bag and hope.
Timing
Apply before planting, incorporated into the root zone during bed preparation. Biochar is a structural amendment — it needs to be where roots will grow, not on the surface.
On perennials and orchards, work it into the drip line rather than against the trunk.
Surface application is the other common waste: biochar is light, and material left on top blows away in the dry season and washes off in the wet.
Particle size
Finer material integrates faster and acts sooner. Coarser material persists longer and does more for drainage and aeration.
For vegetable beds, finer is usually the better choice. For heavy or compacted soils where the problem is structure rather than fertility, coarser material does more work. A mix is a reasonable default when you are unsure.
One safety note: dry, fine biochar is dusty and the dust is an irritant. Wet it down before handling — which charging does anyway.
What to expect, and when
Be realistic about the timeline, because unrealistic expectations are what kill good practices:
- Season one — modest visible change if charged properly; a dip if it was not. Water retention is usually the first thing growers notice, particularly on sandy ground.
- Season two and three — structural effects compound as the material integrates and biology establishes.
- Long term — the carbon stays. This is not an input you reapply every season.
Biochar is a slow amendment. Judged on a single season it will usually disappoint; judged over three it often looks like the best thing you did to that field.
Certification
If you farm under organic certification, confirm biochar's status with your own certifier before applying at scale, and keep the feedstock documentation. Rules vary between certification bodies, and feedstock — what the biochar was made from — is usually the deciding factor. Do not rely on a supplier's assurance, including ours; get it from the body that certifies you.
